Green roofs and green walls: do they work in Nigerian cities?

What is a green roof?

A green roof is a roof covered with a growing layer: waterproofing at the bottom, then a drainage layer, soil or growing medium, and plants on top. A green wall is a similar system fixed to a wall. Both are used in many hot cities around the world.

What they can do

  • Cool the building. Plants and soil shade the roof and release moisture, so less heat reaches the rooms below.
  • Slow storm water. The growing layer holds part of the rain and releases the rest more slowly.
  • Protect the roof. A covered waterproof layer is shielded from sun and temperature swings.
  • Add green space in dense areas where there is no room for a garden.

What to plan for

  1. Strength. A green roof is heavy, especially when wet. The structure must be designed for it.
  2. Waterproofing. This is the most important layer. A leak under soil is hard and costly to fix.
  3. Plant choice. Pick hardy plants that survive the dry season with little water.
  4. Maintenance. Weeding, checking drains and watering in dry spells need to be budgeted from the start.

Is it worth the cost?

A green roof costs more to build than a plain roof. It makes most sense on flat roofs of public, commercial or institutional buildings, where cooling, rain control and appearance all matter. For a small home, a light-coloured roof, shade trees and ventilation usually give more cooling for the money.
