A green standard built for emerging markets
EDGE stands for Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies. It is a green building certification created by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group. It is designed for fast-growing countries and focuses on practical measures rather than complicated paperwork.
What it measures
A building aims to reach a minimum level of savings compared with a typical local building in three areas:
- Energy used in the building
- Water used in the building
- Energy embodied in materials, meaning the energy used to make the products that go into the walls, floors and roof
At the basic level, the target is a saving of at least twenty percent in each. Higher levels exist for buildings that go further.
Why it matters to an owner
- Lower running costs. The savings in energy and water repeat every month.
- Clear targets. Designers know exactly what they must achieve.
- Credibility. Banks, investors and buyers increasingly ask for proof that a building is efficient.
- Funding access. Some lenders offer better terms for certified green projects.
The best time to start
EDGE works best when it begins at the design stage, when changes are cheap. Our team includes an EDGE expert who can run the first assessment on your drawings and tell you which measures give the most savings for the least money.
