Green space is infrastructure
It is easy to treat parks and gardens as decoration. In a hot, wet city they are working equipment. Shade lowers the temperature around buildings, and soft ground soaks up rain that would otherwise run straight into the street.
What green space does
- Cools. Trees shade walls, roofs and pavements, which stay cooler than bare concrete in the sun.
- Slows water. Leaves and roots reduce the force of rain, and soil absorbs part of it.
- Protects soil. Plant cover holds the ground together and reduces erosion beside drains and paths.
- Improves daily life. People use shaded, green places more, for exercise, rest and meeting.
Keeping it healthy
We maintain green parks and gardens as part of our work. These habits make the biggest difference:
- Choose plants that suit the climate. Local and well-adapted species need less water and fewer replacements.
- Water by need. Early morning or evening watering loses less to the sun.
- Mulch and mow sensibly. Mulch protects soil from heat and keeps moisture in; avoid cutting grass too short.
- Keep drains and paths clear. Leaves and soil that wash into a drain will block it.
- Prune and inspect. Remove dead branches before the rainy season and check trees near buildings and paths.
Plan it with the drainage
The best parks are designed with water in mind from the start: planted areas where water can soak in, and clear channels where it must drain away. That is the approach we took at Maitama Amusement Park.
