Cutting your electricity bill with lighting and appliances

The cheapest power is the power you do not use

Every unit you save is a unit you never have to buy, generate or store. That is why efficiency comes before solar in any good plan.

Lighting

  • Replace old bulbs with LED lamps, which give the same light for much less power and last far longer.
  • Use daylight where you can, with light-coloured walls that reflect it.
  • Switch off lights in empty rooms, or fit simple timers or sensors in corridors and security areas.

Cooling

  • Use ceiling or standing fans first. They use a fraction of the power of an air conditioner.
  • If you need air conditioning, choose an efficient model sized to the room, and keep doors and windows closed while it runs.
  • Shade and a reflective roof reduce how hard it must work.

Other big users

  • Refrigerators: keep the back ventilated and the door seals tight.
  • Water heating: heat only what you need, or use a solar heater.
  • Standby power: switch devices off at the socket when not in use.

Do the sums

Compare the price of an efficient appliance with its running cost over its life. A product that costs a little more but uses much less often wins in the long run.
