Generator or solar? The real cost for a small business

Two ways to pay for power

A generator is cheap to buy but costs money every time it runs: fuel, oil, servicing and repairs. A solar system costs much more at the start but has very low running costs afterwards. The right choice depends on how you use power, not on which looks cheaper on the day.

Work out your generator cost

  1. Note how many litres of fuel you buy each week.
  2. Multiply by the local fuel price to get a weekly and a yearly cost.
  3. Add servicing, oil and repairs, and the cost of replacing the generator every few years.

Work out the solar cost

  1. List your equipment and the hours it runs. This shows how much power you need.
  2. Get written quotations for panels, inverter, batteries and installation.
  3. Add the cost of replacing batteries later, because they do not last as long as panels.

Compare over several years

Put both totals side by side for five and ten years. Divide the extra up-front cost of solar by the yearly fuel you will save. The answer is a rough payback period. If it is a few years and the system lasts much longer, solar usually wins for businesses that run most of the day.

A hybrid often makes sense

  • Use solar for daytime loads such as lights, fans and computers.
  • Keep a small generator for peak or backup needs.
  • Save power first: efficient lights and appliances shrink the system you must buy.
