What is a bill of quantities, and why should you read it?

The document behind your building’s price

A bill of quantities, often shortened to BOQ, lists every item of work in a project, such as excavation, concrete, blockwork, roofing, plumbing and painting, together with the quantity of each and its price. Quantity surveyors prepare it from the drawings and specifications.

Why it matters to you

  • Fair comparison. When every contractor prices the same list, you can compare bids honestly.
  • Control of changes. If you change something later, the BOQ gives a basis for the extra cost or saving.
  • Early warning. You can see which items take the most money and ask whether they are worth it.

What to look for when you read one

  1. Is anything missing? Drainage, external works and finishing items are often forgotten.
  2. Are quantities clear? Items measured in vague lump sums hide risk.
  3. Are green features shown separately? Insulation, solar and water tanks should have their own lines so you can judge each one.
  4. Is there a sum for contingencies? Every project meets surprises.

Ask for help early

A quantity surveyor can prepare a BOQ for your project or review one you already have. It is a small cost compared with the money it protects. Contact contact@autobillconst.com.
