Solar power for your home: what to check before you buy

Start with what you use

Before you look at a single panel, list your appliances and how many hours a day each runs. This shows how much electricity you really need. A system sized without this list will be too small to help or too large to pay for itself.

Five questions for any supplier

  1. What size is the system, and how was it worked out? You should see the sums.
  2. What are the warranties? Ask separately about panels, inverter and batteries.
  3. Who services it, and where are they based? A warranty is only useful if someone can repair the system.
  4. What happens in cloudy weeks and at night? Understand what the batteries or grid backup will cover.
  5. Is the roof suitable? Shade from trees or neighbouring buildings reduces output.

Look at the whole cost

The panels are only part of the price. Add the inverter, batteries, cables, mounting, installation, and later battery replacement. Compare that with what you now spend on grid power and generator fuel each month, to see how many years the system takes to repay itself.

Use less first

Efficient lighting, a fan instead of an air conditioner, and a cooler roof all reduce the size of the system you need. Saving a unit of power is almost always cheaper than generating one.
