Think in layers
Flood protection works best as several small defences, not one big one. Each layer buys you time or reduces damage.
Six steps
- Know your risk. Ask neighbours where water gathers and how high it has come before. Mark the highest level on a wall or gate post.
- Raise floor levels. In new buildings, set the floor above the highest known water level. A raised plinth is far cheaper to build than to fix later.
- Direct water away. Slope the compound away from the house, and make sure gutters, drains and the compound gate do not let water pool against walls.
- Keep drains clear. Clean the drain in front of your gate before the rains, and never throw refuse into it.
- Protect what matters. Put sockets and meters higher on the wall, and keep important papers and electronics above the flood line.
- Have a plan. Agree on where the family will go, what to carry, and who to call. Keep a torch and a charged phone ready.
What not to do
- Do not block a neighbour’s drainage path with a wall or extension.
- Do not pave the whole compound. Leave soft ground so rain can soak in.
